Appalachian trail
(say app-uh-LAY-chen trail)

air pressure
The amount that air pushes on you.  Yes!   Air has weight and it pushes down on you from all directions--and your body pushes back.  As you go higher into the mountains, the air pressure changes and you feel different because of it.  Most importantly, it becomes harder for you to breath the same and you get out of breath more easily.
alpine
Place or thing that is very much like the Alps or the way things are in the Alps.  Usually this means a place that is very high up with very little trees growing.  Places like this have long, long winters, short summers and a lot of snow--and the air feels thin because you are so high up.

Something that originally came from the Alps, too--like downhill skiing--can be called alpine.  Sometimes downhill skiing is called Alpine skiing, because it originally came from there.
Alps
The highest mountains in Europe and the place where you find the Matterhorn.  Mountain climbing started in the Alps.

altitude
A word that means height, but usually only when talking about really big things, like mountains.
altitude sickness
Sickness caused by being too high.  Usually it only causes a headache and an upset stomach.  Drinking more water often makes it go away.   Sometimes, though, you have to go lower on the mountain for the sickness to go away.
Andes
(say ANN deez)
The highest mountains in South America, and the second highest mountains in the world.

anorak
(say ANN-uh-rack)
A pull over jacket with an attached hood.  It is usually used for rain.

Aurora Borealis
(say aw-ROAR-uh bore-ee-AL-iss)
The Aurora Borealis is a "light show" of bright colors in the sky that happens mostly close to the North and South Pole.  Also called Northern Lights.

Aurora Borealis
aurora borealis
avalanche
(say AV-uh-lantch)
Giant rush of snow coming down a steep slope.  Avalanches are very dangerous and can bury people and whole buildings under huge amounts of snow.   Avalanches are much more likely to happen in some places than in others, and also at certain times--mostly in the spring, when melting snow becomes very heavy, and after big snowfalls.
