ecology
(say ee-COL-oh-gee)
The study of the outdoors, all of the creatures that live in it and how they work together.
ecosystem
A piece of land in nature and all of the things living on it that work togethe--and get messed up if one part of the ecosystem is messed up.
electrolyte
(say ee-LECK-tro-light)
Mineral, like Iron, Calcium or Potassium, that is very important for human beings to live.  When you exercise a lot and sweat, you lose electrolytes, so you must replace them with the food you eat.  Sports drinks can give you back some electrolytes, too.
elevation
How high something is.  The word elevation is usually only used when talking about things like mountains.
erode
To wear away.  Believe it or not, all mountains erode from the wind, the rain and snow and become flat land again.  Of course, it takes millions of years!
erupt
To have a big explosion, like a volcano exploding with lava or ash.
Erupting Volcano
erupting volcano
evaporation
Process when liquid water turns into gas and goes into the air.
evacuation
(say ee-vack-you-A-shun)
Removal of someone from the wilderness who has been hurt.  Sometimes people who have gotten hurt are taken out on a stretcher--that other people have to carry over rough ground--and sometimes they are even taken out with a helicopter.  In some cases, they can get out themselves with a little help.   Whichever way they use, though, they still have to get out to see a doctor.
Everest
The tallest mountain in the world.  Mt. Everest is 29,028 feet/8848 meters.  That's as high as jet planes fly!
Mt. Everest
mt. everest
evergreen
Tree or bush that stays green and keeps leaves all year long.
Evergreen Tree
evergreen tree
expedition
A long and often difficult trip into the wilderness.
exposure
Sickness caused by becoming too cold in the outdoors.  The body can begin to shut down if you don't get help.  The best way to deal with exposure is to not let it happen in the first place!   It is easy to prevent exposure from happening by doing the right things.
extinct
To be all gone, like the dinosaurs.  Animals become extinct for different reasons.  Sometimes they become extinct because too many of them are killed by hunters, and sometimes they become extinct because too much of the land they live on is taken over by humans.  Sometimes they become extinct and nobody knows why.

The word extinct can also be used to talk about volcanoes.  An extinct volcano is one that is no longer active and will not erupt again.
