false peak or
false summit
High point on a mountain that looks like the top of the mountain while you are climbing it--but it's not!  Even though it's easy to see the real top of a mountain from far away, sometimes it's not easy to see the top when you are close.  A false summit makes you think you've made it to the top--finally--when you haven't.
filter
Piece of equipment used to clean water so you can drink it safely.  If you do not filter the water you take from the outdoors, or clean it some other way, you can get sick!

foam pad
Soft and spongy pad you sleep on--in your sleeping bag, of course--when camping outdoors.  You don't have to sleep on a foam pad if you don't want to when you camp, but you might not be very comfortable!

frame pack
Backpack with a frame inside to make it strong enough to hold a lot of things.  A backpack without a frame isn't very strong and won't hold very much.  If you want to carry things like a tent, a stove and a sleeping bag, you need a frame pack.  Some backpacks have frames on the outside.   You carry the frame and the areas to put your equipment into are attached to it.   Most frame packs today, however, have a frame inside the backpack, where you can't see it.

freeze-dried
Food that is freeze-dried has had the water taken out of it so that it will  not go bad for a very long time.  All you have to do is put it back in water and you can eat it again.  Freeze-dried food is good to take with you in the outdoors because it will not go bad when you don't have a refrigerator, and freeze-dried food is very light to carry!  Almost anything can be freeze-dried--including ice cream--but some things taste better than others afterwards.
frost nip
Cold feeling you get in your fingers and toes and nose when it is cold outside.  It goes away when you go someplace warm.
frostbite
Frostbite is a much more serious form of frost nip.   If skin is allowed to get frostbite, it may lost all feeling, forever, or even have to be removed.  The best way to deal with frostbite is to keep it from happening in the first place!  Like most health problems in the outdoors, it is easy to prevent frostbite.
