gaiter
(say GAY-ter)
Piece of clothing that attaches to the tops of your boots and goes up to just under your knees.  Gaiters are good for keeping snow from getting into the tops of your boots when the snow is really deep!

Gaiters

glacier
(say GLAY-sher)
Giant "river" of frozen snow and ice that comes off of a mountain.  Glaciers run through the places in a mountain where water would run if it was warmer and they do flow downhill like a river, only very slowly.  It can take many years for the ice at the top of the mountain to flow down to the bottom!
glissade
(say gliss-SOD)
To "skate" on top of snow with snowshoes or even with winter boots. Sometimes you can move faster if you glissade than if you walk.
global warming
Theory that the earth is getting hotter because of air pollution created by humans.  Some people do not believe the earth is getting warmer because of pollution made by people but that the earth may be getting warmer for its own reasons.  (Remember, the earth has gone from cold ice ages to warmer periods of time back to ice ages many times.)  Some people don't even think the earth is getting warmer at all, but most people agree that the earth IS getting warmer, for whatever reason.  Some glaciers in Alaska have retreated 75 miles/125 kilometers in just the last 200 years!

gore-tex
Waterproof cloth that keeps you dry when it rains but lets your sweat get out.  If you exercise a lot when you are wearing a raincoat made out of rubber, the rubber keeps the sweat close to your body and makes you feel very wet inside even though it is supposed to be keeping you dry!
gorge
Deep and steep valley cut into the mountains, usually by a river.  Sometimes the sides of a gorge are just sheer cliffs that go straight down.
gorp
Mixture of things like nuts, raisins and dried fruit that is sometimes eaten by people when they go outdoors.  Some people really like it!  You can put almost anything you like into a bag and mix it up and call it gorp--things like chocolate chips or M&M's, but something really healthy should also be in there.  The reason people do it is because it tastes good, it gives them energy and it doesn't go bad when you don't have a refrigerator!
grade
Number used to tell you how steep something is.   Some roads have signs on them telling you this.
green
Besides being a color, green is used a lot of times to mean something or someone that is clean and not very damaging to the environment.
guide
Trained person who leads you into the wilderness when you don't know what you are doing.  You have to pay for guides.
