ice axe
Axe used by mountaineers for snow and ice.   Sticking an ice axe into the ice or frozen snow helps keep you from falling when it is very slippery.

ice cave
Cave in the ice that is either manmade or natural.   Some volcanoes, like Mt. Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington, create ice caves in the snow and ice on top of them with the steam they release from their vents.   Natural ice caves like this can be very beautiful but you have to be careful inside them.  Pieces of them can collpase without warning.  Sometimes people make ice caves to sleep in.  Even though they are cold inside, they are often warmer than the air outside.  Also, they protect people from the wind and snow.

ice climbing
Sport like rock climbing, except it happens on ice and frozen snow.  In order to be safe, you have to use ropes and, like rock climbing, you have to know what you are doing because it's not easy to climb up ice.   You also have to be careful because you never know when the pieces of ice you are climbing on might break off!
ice fall
Area on a mountain where huge chunks of ice tend to fall, creating a place that is difficult and dangerous to cross, and always changing.   Sometimes chunks of ice the size of houses, or larger, fall into ice falls.
ice screw
Screw that is placed into the ice during ice climbing in order to be an anchor.

igloo
Building made out of blocks of snow and ice.   Eskimos are famous for building them, of course, but other people can build them in the outdoors, too.  They are a good way to protect yourself from cold winds and snow.
insomnia
(say in-SOM-nee-uh)
The inability to sleep.  Sometimes being at a high place or exercising a lot when you aren't used to it can cause you to have insomnia.
iodine
(say EYE-oh-dine)
Dark blue liquid used to clean the germs out of a cut but also, sometimes, to kill the germs in water to make it drinkable.  Iodine is a cheap and easy way to make water drinkable, but not very good, because it makes the water blue and gives it a very nasty taste!  Using a filter, chlorine or boiling water are much better things to do.
