landslide
Disaster caused by a huge piece of land sliding down a hillside or a mountainside.  Landslides usually happen in places where there aren't many trees or bushes because the roots of plants hold the dirt together.   When a steep place has lost trees from a forest fire or from logging, for example, it often ends up sliding down to a lower place--and sweeping away or covering anything in its path.

leeward
(say LEE-werd)
In a place away from the wind.  When you are camping outdoors in a windy place with few trees for protection, it is a good idea to put your tent in a leeward location so you don't have to be kept awake all night by your tent rattling and you don't have to worry about your tent blowing over if the wind gets really strong.
lenticular cloud
(say len-TICK-you-lar cloud)
Long, thin cloud created at the top of a mountain by very high winds.  The wind stretches out the cloud and lets the people down below know what is happening up above (if they know what it means!).

litter
Strecher used in the wilderness to carry people who are injured out.  Be smart!  Be careful when you go outdoors and you will never end up in a litter.
long underwear
Underwear used to keep you warm outdoors, whether you are sleeping or moving around.  It is a good idea to have a layer like long underwear on under your clothes when it is cold outside.

Lyme Disease
Disease caused by a germ given to humans when ticks bite them.  Some people get very sick from Lyme disease, but usually they get better if they go to a doctor and get medicine before waiting too long.
