Place in a river where the water gets very rough and, sometimes, you find a lot of rocks.  Rapids can be dangerous but, if you know how to, you can go through them on a raft--and it's A LOT of fun!

rest step
Way of walking while climbing mountains that lets your legs rest as much as possible while still moving at the same time.  A rest step is taken each time you take a step.  You lean back on your back leg and rest on it for a split second while you are moving your other leg forward.  If you do this each time you take a step, you give your legs quite a bit of rest.
ridge
Line of high ground with steep slopes going down either side.  Many mountains connected to each other in a line make a ridge.   Even the low points between them are higher than most of the ground in the area.

rockfall
Place on a mountain where a lot of rocks tend to fall, creating a big pile of rocks.  It can be difficult to cross a rockfall because the ground is so uneven.  Also, you have to be careful when you are around a rockfall because rocks could fall on you!
rock climbing
Sport where people climb up steep cliffs.   There are many types of rock to climb on--and some are easier than others--and there is a system to rate how difficult climbs are.  Rock climbing is a complicated thing to do and you have to be very prepared!
rodent
Small animal, like a rat or a chipmunk or a raccoon, that is good at getting at your food when you are camping outdoors.  You have to protect your food so that doesn't happen.

rope team
Team of mountain climbers attached to each other with a rope.  This is very important when climbing big mountains because if anyone falls the other climbers can stop him or her from falling further by throwing themsevles on the ground and making the rope tight.
