water resistant Something that holds water out for a little while, but will eventually soak through if it gets wets enough. Something that is water resistant is not good to use if you might be in the rain for more than a few quick minutes.

waterproof Something that keeps out water completely. Plastic and rubber are totally waterproof.

waterproof-breathable Something that is waterproof but lets sweat get out. Things that are plastic or rubber are waterproof, but if you are sweating they keep the sweat inside them and you will eventually find water on the inside as well as on the outside. Something that is waterproof-breathable lets the sweat get out so you stay dry inside. Gore-tex was the first cloth to be waterproof-breathable. Clothing that is waterproof-breathable is nicer than clothing that is waterproof, like rubber or plastic, but it is also much more expensive.

wetland Swamp or marsh. Wetlands are the lowest places in the land where water and rain eventually go. They are "nature's sponges." For this reason, it is important for wetlands to be protected because water in nature needs someplace to go. If wetlands are destroyed, the water will end up going somewhere--but not necessarily to places that are good for people or animals! Also, wetlands play an important part in cleaning water.

whiteout Situation high on a mountain where the ground is covered in snow and the air is completely white because of fog and/or a blizzard. Whiteouts are dangerous when you are in a place with no trees because everything around you looks white and it is very easy to get lost and walk off a cliff or fall down a hill!

whitewater Rough water that is white from waves and foaming. Oceans can be whitewater from a lot of wind, but usually whitewater talks about rivers that are rough--rivers that people like to go down with rafts, canoes or kayaks.

wick When you are exercising and sweating, the clothes you are wearing absorb the sweat. However, some clothes hold on to the water and stay very wet, while other clothes wick the seat away--which means they "send" it to the outside of themselves, so the sweat can go into the air and you can stay dry inside.

wildlife Any animals that live outdoors.

wind chill Extra feeling of cold caused by blowing wind. The wind pulls away the heat from your body and makes you feel much colder than you would if the air was the same temperature but there was no wind.

| wind
pants Pants you wear when it is really windy but probably not going to rain. They are usually thin and will not keep you dry if it rains, but they make your legs feel the wind a lot less. Sometimes you can wear only shorts underneath the wind pants, if it is a warm but windy day. |

windbreaker Light jacket that makes wind feel less cold. A windbreaker is good st stopping wind but it does stop the rain. The first few drops do not get you wet, but before long they will all soak in.

windward In the direction of the wind. If you are camping in a place where the wind is strong, you do not want to be on the windward side of something, like a big rock, or you will be very unhappy.
