TIPS
Tips

*All but one of the pictures on this page were taken by an amateur
photographer soon after buying his first camera...

Contrast
To show differences when compared.

Showing two different things next to each other can be
used to exaggerate how different they are.

photography_contrast1.jpg (3582 bytes)    photography_contrast2.jpg (3535 bytes)
The black ground and trees in these pictures makes
the colorful sunsets look even more colorful--
and the colorful sunsets make the
ground and trees look even more dark...

Perspective
"A view of things in their true relationship to each other."

By taking a picture of something small in front of something BIG, you can show how BIG and small they really are.

Using perspective

photography_perspective2.jpg (5826 bytes)
This picture shows you
how small the people are
compared to the waterfall.

Not using perspective

photography_perspective1.jpg (4777 bytes)
This picture of a waterfall
gives you no idea
how big anything is.

Using perspective

photography_perspective3.jpg (5444 bytes)
This picture shows you
how small the woman is
compared to the mountain.

photography_perspective4.jpg (12946 bytes)
The trail going off in the distance,
and the very small person in the
middle of the picture,
give you an idea of how long the trail is.

*Taking the picture with people at different
distances along the trail would have made the picture even better.

Humor

Sometimes you can make a good picture by having someone
do something funny, like this...

Aiming the Camera

Using Reflections

The reflection of something on very still water can make for
a great picture.
